I saw a post on Instagram about new musical Nearlyweds having a preview in London before heading off to Edinburgh Fringe. I’m not going to Edinburgh and I was already scheduled to be in London on 26th June so it felt obvious I should buy a ticket.
The show was in The Union Theatre for 2 previews on the same day. The evening performance was completely sold out which is no surprise at all considering the calibre of the cast. Personally I had seen Ollie Wray in White Rose earlier in the year and I know he has a fantastic voice so that sold it to me in itself. The rest of the cast can also sing beautifully.

For the second time in one day I sat next to the parent of someone involved in a show. This felt like a complete privilege both times. This time I was next to Jasmine Alice’s mum and heard that not only has she written, composed and directed this show but is also a performer herself. Ridiculous amounts of talent for one person to have, but this knowledge of the whole process really shone through in the show itself.
Billed as a charming and cheesy romantic comedy, Nearlyweds is exactly that. All the ingredients are there, a gorgeous and very talented cast, more than one romantic thread, and on top of that some fantastic musical numbers and comedy moments.
The highlights for me were firstly, all of the songs, in fact if there was anything I could say to ramp this up even more it would be more songs please. Secondly, the character Gail, portrayed to absolute perfection by Katherine Leyva. Her comic timing is absolutely spot on and she also stunned with “Brian From Accounting” which is an adorable song in itself.
If you are heading to Edinburgh, and like a rom com and/or musical, do look this one up. You can book a ticket here.
Compliments to whoever designed the programme as well, it is stunning.
