Review: Am I Losing My Mind or Just My Figure? (Edinburgh Fringe)

Am I Losing my Mind or Just My Figure? is a one woman play originally written by Sam Holland-Bunyan and reworked in collaboration with Genevieve Labuschagne. I went to review the show during my time at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Fin (Genevieve Labuschagne) is an illustrator but has a side hustle as a zero hours cycle courier to pay the bills. As turning 30 becomes an issue, so do the common "helpful" comments from the people around her, and with them the relentless pressure to settle down.

Fin has a partner called Alfie but the relationship doesn’t seem entirely established at the start of the show. However, when Fin discovers she’s pregnant this focusses her mind, not least through the challenge of taking a test at work with an almost-functional privacy curtain and an inappropriate colleague to make things more complicated.

The play takes us on an emotional journey as Fin experiences various situations that are common occurrences for many pregnant women, and some that are not so mainstream. The sudden pressure to “do the decent thing” and get married.  The oversharing by other parents. The sudden unavailability of her partner who seems to disappear into the distance for a while.

A stool is used throughout the play to depict a bike, a chair, a bed and more. The other item of furniture is a clothes rail containing a number of items used in the play. This use of a minimal set is appropriate for the small space, but due to the strength of performance, the chosen pieces enhance each situation well.

In addition, the use of illustrations was unexpected and inspired, especially when Fin was drawing and the images appeared in real time behind her.

The performance is subtle, insightful and persuasive. Funny at times, heartbreaking moments later, it would be hard to imagine someone who had not been in some of the situations that unfolded being able to perform them in such an honest, unflinching way. The portrayal of additional characters is equally well done, and some of these characters add light relief at times.

Am I Losing My Mind or Just My Figure? is an impressive piece of fringe theatre. It narrates a segment of a life which some may say is quite ordinary, yet because of the way the play is crafted, and most importantly because of the strength of performance, it is one that will stay with me.  Genevieve Labuschagne made every word, breath and facial expression count, and this created the bond with the character that the audience needed to feel the emotional load of each situation.

A stunning one woman show, with an absolutely beautiful ending.
