Review: Tweedy's Massive Solo Show (Edinburgh Fringe)

A long time ago in a village far, far away (from Edinburgh Festival Fringe), I remember sitting and watching Gifford’s Circus and loving the show and one cast member in particular. When the programme for Edinburgh Festival Fringe fell onto my doorstep I was excited to see Tweedy’s Massive Solo Show listed. Showing in Udderbelly – a circus tent shaped as a giant purple cow, the excitement was palpable before the show even began, with plenty of young children filling seats with their parents.
And so it was that for the next hour Tweedy delighted the audience with his usual blend of humour, magic, slapstick and chaos. Using a range of objects you’d be likely to find around your house, he drew us into his world completely, complete with his pets Keith the iron and Steve the mop. Don’t question it!
Tweedy seems to know exactly who to interact with, with audience participation being entirely good natured and low demand.

A recent addition to Tweedy’s set is an iPad which frequently distracts him during the show, with Siri at times providing music as requested, and at other times causing issues and getting in the way of what Tweedy is trying to do.
The things that entertain the smallest audience members such as fart and poo jokes and items constantly getting lost are there, the way Tweedy deals with the heckling from tiny people is appropriate for the little ones but he also includes cleverly embedded wonders for adults too. A recurring issue with Tweedy’s shoes going missing and reappearing in other locations kept me guessing where they would appear next, but there was so much going on in the show that you couldn’t concentrate for long enough to work it how he was doing this. An extended scene with a ladder was physically impressive and the hint of danger at one point that had me holding my breath. But Tweedy emerged unscathed and ready to face another audience.
This is a show that engages with everyone, and is a wonderful way to spend an hour with this playful clown who makes everything he presents look very simple and natural, when there is obviously a great deal of skill and practice holding this show together.
Magical.
