I was invited to a showcase of Flyology, a new musical by Tamiko Dooley and Cathy Farmer which was happening as part of the Musical Bites season at The Other Palace. I hadn’t heard of Musical Bites before, but walking into the foyer bar area of this theatre to an atmosphere that was fizzing with anticipation was quite an experience in itself.

If you are a fan of The Piano (Channel 4) you may have already heard of Tamiko from watching Series 3. It doesn’t really matter if you haven’t though as everyone will hear about her when Flyology opens in its final form.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from a showcase of a new musical, but we had an introduction from Tamiko herself, then she accompanied a cast of 4 (Ashleigh Cassidy, Beth McKinnon, Megan Abbott and Charlie Renwick) on the piano as they performed acoustically from a tiny stage. What an experience. The vocals were absolutely gorgeous and the songs themselves were beautiful. Although it wasn’t a staged show, the interactions between the cast members were lovely to watch.

I am going to save a full review of Flyology for when I see the show, as I am 100% going to be buying a ticket for this. For now, here is the summary that was on the Musical Bites post about the showcase:
FLYOLOGY is a defiant new musical where Ada Lovelace, Ethel Smyth and Emmeline Pankhurst wake in a future that’s deleted them. Trapped in a perfect system with no room for unruly women, they fight back – hacking the code, rewriting the rules, and singing a truth the future can’t erase.

I am very grateful to have been invited to this showcase, and I can't wait to see the show in it's final form. I also highly recommend the Musical Bites experience - it is such an intimate way to discover a new musical alongside other likeminded people. Wonderful!

More of my photos from this showcase are over on Instagram here.
I was gifted a ticket for this showcase. This does not in any way influence what I have written, my posts are always my honest opinion as an audience member, whether I have bought a ticket or not.
